Horse Tack Room Remodel
September 2014 - Middlesex NC
Mission: Re-model an existing 10' by 12' tack room. As the horse collection had grown, so had the need for organized storage options.
Special Requests:
1. Dust proof the entire room.
2. Increase the amount of storage space.
3. Incorporate exposed barn door hardware.
4. Eliminate open shelving to prevent dust from settling.
5. Choose a stylish, modern color palette.
Layout / Design: The customer's idea of including a built-in closet along one side of the room provided a great opportunity to utilize exposed hardware sliding doors to provide maximum access and modern style.
Two custom built doors slide past one another on galvanized by-pass door tracks. Floor-to-ceiling adjustable shelves were installed and designed to carry a load of (2,000 lbs) each. A small desk area was created with built-in base cabinet with adjustable shelving and full-access swinging doors. The upper cabinet features a set of light-weight by-pass doors and several adjustable shelves. The back splash and counter top are painted with chalkboard paint to create a large erasable writing surface.
An existing bridle rack that hung in the tack room for decades was altered and re used. Additional premium accessories include a fully adjustable grid-based tack storage system with an array of attachments. A high-capacity blanket rack was installed to utilize the space behind the door for storage and drying. Three over-sized collapsible saddle racks provide flexible saddle storage space.
Color Choice: The interior of both cabinets, the interior of the built-in closet, and the ceiling were painted with semi-gloss white paint. This provides a bright surface that is easy to keep clean. The trim and accents are painted a soft flat lilac, chosen to provide a stylish contrast to the black and gray accessories. The walls and sliding doors were painted with a very light gray to brighten the space while complementing the relatively dark trim color.
Final Results: A modern and bright tack room with tons of storage space.

Historic Bellpost Replacement
July 2015 - Elm City NC
Mission: Remove a 200+ year old bell and bell post. Mount bell in new location on new post.
Special Requests:
1. Remove all original materials intact.
2. Re-use existing hardware from mounting flange.
Removal: The original post had been exposed to rot and insect damage over the years and was starting to lean. We excavated down beside the post and carefully freed it from the soil without damage. The old post hole was high-pressure tamped with clean clay fill dirt to prevent any stumbling hazard. The original mounting bolts were very carefully loosened and all were removed without breaking. The bell was disassembled, inspected, and cleaned.
New Post: The new post is a twelve foot pressure treated 6x6. It was hand selected to be super straight with vertical grain. The top of the post was notched to accept the mounting flange of the bell. The notch detail ensures that the cast iron mounting flange bears on the wood, instead of relying on the strength of the bolts to support the bell. The bolt holes were pilot drilled and the bolt heads were countersunk into the back of the post. The original fasteners varied in length so they were each recessed to produce even bolt lengths on the visible side of the mounting flange.
Installation: The post received two coats of our premium quality fence paint before installation. To achieve the original mounting height, the post hole was dug 4' deep. The post was installed with high-pressure tamped clay fill dirt. Spoil pads were used to keep unsightly dirt piles out of flower beds. The bell was lifted into place and attached using the original hardware.
Extra Feature: A solid wood pull handle was painted to match and installed to allow ringing. The handle was mounted with a modern bolt that matched the square design of the original hardware. It was kept high enough to be out of the reach of children.
This bell is ready for another 200 years of service.
